This course will review ethical and legal principles important to the delivery of oral health care delivery. Recent updates to the Michigan Administrative Rules will be highlighted including duties that can be delegated to allied health personnel.
Objectives:
The participant will be able to:
- Identify ethical principles that apply to the delivery of oral health care services.
- Describe the unintentional torts, including negligence, informed consent and informed refusal and patient abandonment.
- Describe current legal duties that can be delegated to allied health personnel.
- Describe recent updates in the Administrative Rules for Dentistry in Michigan impacting record keeping, patient of record and licensure.

Professor Pamela Zarkowski, JD, MPH, BSDH
Professor Pamela Zarkowski, JD, MPH, BSDH is currently Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and a Professor in the School of Dentistry at University of Detroit Mercy. An educator for more than 45 years she teaches, writes and researches in the areas of legal and ethical issues, leadership and oral health. She has held numerous leadership positions in dental and dental hygiene organizations.
